Last week, BCI President James Christie continued his advocacy on behalf of specialty crop producers during a small agricultural roundtable in Hanford, CA with USDA Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs Luke J. Lindberg.
The discussion brought together representatives from almonds, walnuts, table grapes, stone fruit, citrus, table olives, apples, blueberries, olive oil, cherries, dried plums - and fresh pears - many of whom are facing increasing pressure from rising imports.
During the roundtable, James underscored the growing impact of low-priced fresh pear imports from Argentina and how they are eroding the competitiveness of California growers. Other industry leaders echoed similar concerns, pointing to broader headwinds across the specialty crop sector.
The conversation also addressed expectations around trade policy. James referenced President Trump’s stated support for tariffs and Ambassador Greer’s call for managed trade, emphasizing that growers are looking for policy follow-through. At the same time, participants raised concerns about tariffs on critical farm inputs, which are increasing production costs and compounding competitiveness challenges at home and abroad.
Engagement with federal trade officials remains ongoing. Bryant Christie Inc. will continue discussions with USTR and USDA on these important topics.
