The Challenge
A number of Bryant Christie Inc’s (BCI) Washington-based clients were interested in promising new biopesticides available to control problematic pests for their commodities. Past challenges with pesticide MRLs have taught growers to wisely ask hard questions before deciding to apply any new crop protection product. As BCI investigated this issue, it became clear that there was a major gap in the understanding of international regulations regarding biopesticides. Some markets have clear regulations, while others do not.
Our Solution
BCI determined that a thorough investigation into the basics of biopesticide regulations would be beneficial to Washington growers and to any U.S. commodity that exports. With support from a Washington State Specialty Crop Block Grant, BCI undertook a review of how biopesticide residues are regulated in eight key export markets. This resulting report, International Biopesticide Residue Requirements: Compliance in Key Export Markets, is available here. It outlines biopesticide residue regulations in eight key U.S. export markets: Australia, Canada, China, the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom. The report is designed as an introduction into the biopesticide approval and residue review process for exporters of agricultural products.
